The Official Mascots of the Beijing 2008 Olympic games

The Official Mascots of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

After traveling 137,000 kilometers through 130 cities in 130 days, the sacred flame finally arrived at Beijing 101 Middle School on Friday. In the hands of Xu Zhihong, president of Beijing University, the flame cauldron was ignited to thunderous applause.

The Official Mascots of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

Like the Five Olympic Rings from which they draw their color and inspiration, Fuwa will serve as the Official Mascots of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, carrying a message of friendship and peace -- and good wishes from China -- to children all over the world.

Designed to express the playful qualities of five little children who form an intimate circle of friends, Fuwa also embody the natural characteristics of four of China's most popular animals -- the Fish, the Panda, the Tibetan Antelope, the Swallow -- and the Olympic Flame.

Each of Fuwa has a rhyming two-syllable name -- a traditional way of expressing affection for children in China. Beibei is the Fish, Jingjing is the Panda, Huanhuan is the Olympic Flame, Yingying is the Tibetan Antelope and Nini is the Swallow.

When you put their names together -- Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni -- they say "Welcome to Beijing," offering a warm invitation that reflects the mission of Fuwa as young ambassadors for the Olympic Games.

Fuwa also embody both the landscape and the dreams and aspirations of people from every part of the vast country of China. In their origins and their headpieces, you can see the five elements of nature -- the sea, forest, fire, earth and sky -- all stylistically rendered in ways that represent the deep traditional influences of Chinese folk art and ornamentation.

Breeze for Team India

Mr.Bucknor Dropped

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - West Indian umpire Steve Bucknor has been dropped for next week's third test between Australia and India, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Tuesday.

ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed told a news conference that New Zealand umpire Billy Bowden would stand in the West Indian's place following widespread criticism of Bucknor's performance in last week's second test at Sydney.

"Steve's presence was becoming an issue and he accepts that this is the best course," Speed told reporters.

"He accepts that in the interests of the game and this test match, it was better that another umpire was substituted in for him.

The Indian cricket board (BCCI) had demanded Bucknor be sacked after the 61-year-old made a series of blunders during the second test in Sydney.

The most significant occurred on the first day when Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds was incorrectly given not out caught behind on 30 before going on to make 162 not out.

The ICC does not normally allow member nations to interfere or oppose the appointment of umpires but Speed said the change had been made to alleviate some of the pressure from the escalating row and ensure the series proceeds.

ILL FEELING

"What we have seen over the last week is a lot of criticism of umpiring decisions and a lot of ill feeling," Speed added.

"We could have taken a letter of the law approach and said we appoint the umpires and Steve Bucknor has been appointed for this match and he will stand.

"But what we need to do is to alleviate some of the tension that is focused on this match. One way to do that was to bring in an umpiring team that gives us the opportunity to move on."

Jamaican-born Bucknor is the most experienced umpire in international cricket history, having stood in a record 120 tests and five World Cup finals.

Speed said he expected Bucknor would remain on the ICC's elite umpire panel.

"He is coming to the end of his career, an illustrious career that has seen some high profile matches (but) what we are seeking to do is take some tension out of the situation."

Harbahajan cleared to play

Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has been cleared to resume playing until his appeal against a three-match ban is heard, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Tuesday.

Harbhajan was suspended by ICC match referee Mike Proctor for three matches on Sunday after being found guilty of racially abusing Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds during last week's ill-tempered second test in Sydney.

The spinner has denied abusing Symonds and the Indian cricket board lodged an appeal on his behalf.

ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed said a code of conduct commissioner would be appointed within the next 24 hours, though a date for Harbhajan's appeal had not yet been set.

"The code of conduct says if an appeal decision is not given before a match then that player is available to be selected," Speed told reporters at a media conference.

"That has happened before where players have appealed and they have been available to play pending that appeal.

Speed said the appeal would involve going over the evidence presented in the original hearing in front of match referee Mike Procter.

"That involves some 10 players and officials who have dispersed," Speed said.

"They will probably re-assemble before the third test in Perth but I don't know whether it will be able to happen before the test match or the next test match (in Adelaide)."

Speed added that Australian wrist spinner Brad Hogg had been cited for using abusive language and would appear before Procter prior to the third test.

Local media reported that Hogg had called two Indian batsmen "bastards".

night shifts

New York, Dec 2 (IANS) Working in night shifts may increase the risk of cancer, a team of international scientists said in a report. In their report, the team of 44 scientists from 10 countries commissioned by the World Health Organization's International Agency on Cancer Research is said to have found evidences of a connection between the disease and the people working in night shifts. That evidence included a higher rate of breast cancer in female nurses who work in night shifts, said the report published on online edition of health magazine WebMD.The scientists also reviewed studies in which animals were exposed to light at night, disrupting the animals' circadian rhythm - the regular changes in mental and physical characteristics that occur in the course of a day. They found sufficient evidence of a connection between circadian rhythm disruption and cancer, the report published in the journal 'The Lancet' said.'Shift work that involves circadian rhythm disruption is probably carcinogenic to humans,' writes Kurt Straif, who works for the International Agency for Research on Cancer in France. The scientists noted that night shift work might raise the risk of cancer by suppressing production of melatonin, a hormone chemical involved in the circadian rhythm. They also mentioned in their report that people working as a painter are carcinogenic, and those who work as a firefighter are 'possibly carcinogenic' because of the on-the-job chemical exposure.

This is the Real Love

It was a gloomy Saturday afternoon. A flock of birds was spending great time searching for food and playing on the main road. Out of the sudden, a big truck sped through... sad thing had happened again.

Birds can feel too. Although this bird had already died, another bird flew over to her immediately, just like a family member, unable to accept the truth.

Not long after that, another car stormed in causing the dead bird's body to whirl with the wind. The spouse noticed the movement. As if she was still alive, he quickly flew beside her again.

He stayed beside her and yelled .... "WHY ARE YOU NOT GETTING UP!?"

Unfortunately, she's no longer able to hear him. In the meantime, he's trying to lift her up.

He, of course, was unable to bear the burden. Another car soon passed by. He quickly flew off. Once the car had gone, he came down again.

Although other birds told him its useles, he never gave up. He was trying his best to lift her up to see her flying again. Another car passed by, her dead body whirled again as if still alive and trying to fly.

He had used all of his energy, however...

The photographer said he couldn't shoot any longer. The photographer was so worried that the living bird was going to get hurt by passing cars. So he picked up the dead bird and left it at the roadside. The live one still lingered at a nearby tree as if crying with his singing and refused to leave.

Do humans have the same feelings nowadays?
